Well yesterday afternoon, I have to say was a first for me.
I mean I went on lunch and checked out my usual 2 banks and 3 other bank phone calls checking for half dollars. When I checked the last bank I was feeling inside like why am I doing this anymore. The scary part is I have avoided checking for half dollars the last week or so just because I couldn't muster up the interest and energy to do it.
Then last night, I received my 2012 Chinese Silver Panda and was so excited it arrived but when I showed my kids especially my one daughter they barely even glanced over to see it. I know others here have gone through this but what was once an awesome hobby is turning out to be boring one with no one to share it with. So tired of those around me acting like "oh no he is about to talk about coins again".
And please no one here take this personally because If it wasn't for coincommunity.com I would have bailed awhile ago. I think a small vacation from coins / stacking silver is overdue.
Thanks all for listening to my rant. ST

It's not unusual to take a break every now and then. Is there a coin club near you that you could join? Or maybe even start your own John1

It does sounds like you need a rest, which is actually quite common as john1 noted. I'm sure you will return with renewed interest towards the hobby. I've taken breaks plenty myself, as it can become tedious looking at coin after coin after coin. I wouldn't worry too much about no one paying attention to your coins. Not everyone is interested in them, and after all they are for your enjoyment, right? As long as you enjoy the hobby, that's all that matters.

Yeah, I'm a bit streaky too. Especially in the warmer weather when there is much to do around the house, etc.....anything to get me away from ebay is a good thing Sometimes the coin stuff feels like a job to me, a fun job nonetheless Good to go in fits and starts, keeps the hobby fresh......if I'm not having fun, what's the point

I can feel your pain as well. I have been dealing with coins for 40 plus years and still wonder Why? Take a break for a couple of months and then treat yourself to a large coin show with a big purchase . Then you will be back on the saddle!

perhaps you could go to a show and hunt for some new friends who share the interests that you have and keep in touch with them? its just an idea, any way, I hope you see the joy again and come back one day. but, until then take a break...perhaps sell off some coin roll hunted silver and go for a vacation.
Feel free to call me Will.

It is a hobby for most people I think.
I also make quilts. How interested are you in the process of making quilts? From thinking up the design to drawing it out then onto purchasing just the right fabrics. Cutting the fabric making sure when sewing the pieces together that the points are perfect.
I meet people with the same interest as I have. I do not expect my children or husband to have the same interest. They have hobbies they like and I have no interest in joining in. Sounds like you might need to walk away for a while and do something different to occupy your time. Look inside yourself to find joy and not to others.

heh, heh. I took a break because life got in the way. 25-30 years later, kids out, I'm back.

I was divorced two years ago and have no children. Happiest I've been in a long time, actually. I also have no one to share my hobby with except those in my local coin club or here on these forums.
I'm ok with that. I think its ok to have something that is strictly yours that no one else shares an interest in.
You sound like a fairly social guy, which I am not so much, but the fact that one else shares you interest in no reason to take a break from it. If you're tired, thats one thing, but don't worry about feeling like the odd man out.
Sometimes that's not such a bad position to be in.

Looking at your bio, you joined 2/4/13. You are searching half dollars, you just bought a 2012 Silver Panda and you have kids. Wow! Not sure what kind of income you have but, this is quite an accomplishment. Family comes first especially with kids. Why not take a hiatus from searching. As the other family members said, it is a, "Coin Community Family". Keep us posted.

I can relate to this thread. My wife and kids, with the exception of my son, have no interest in my hobby. My wife does smile when she sees how excited I get over some coins. My five year old son thinks it's pretty cool and "collects" coins too but I assume he'll loose interest. I recently bought him the Zombucks copper bullion collection. He'll be excited when they come in. I have found that I get a lot of enjoyment reading others posts and posting on this forum as my coin outlet. That's why I love this place!

No one takes your rant personally, ST, and many of us long time collectors have taken breaks over the years. Sometimes necessitated by life and other times just to 'get away for a bit!' Listen to your family (CCF!) and feel no guilt nor failure. Your 'gut' is telling you to take a break, and your 'heart' will tell you when to get excited again.

Thanks all for the encouraging words and wisdom. I think I do need a break and will be taking this break now. But I will be on the forum to continue to read the happenings of my fellow coin collectors and stackers.
Thanks again everyone. ST

Inexplicably, my wife and daughter are much more interested in the gold and silver jewelry I occasionally pickup at "spotty" prices.
My mother takes an interest in what coins I am getting -- I told her of my new interest in late Roman bronzes, and she asked me to give her something for her birthday/Christmas, etc. I found a nice, well-packaged set of Constantine, Constans, and Constantine II that will be headed her way next month.
