Hi. I found this 1960 D that looks like the top of the 9 in the date 1960 is filled in. I also think that the bottom of the R in the word LIBERTY is filled in too. Is this common or is it really an error? Thanks.

I agree with karat ^

The dies in this era were over-used and as a result die chips started to occur. This will not be your last coin you will find with small die chips. For it to be a keeper the die chip would have to be significantly larger.

That is funny. I have one of those mixed in with all my copper cents. No premium.

The 1950's are full of this kind of error. The semi-famous BIE cent is caused from a small die chip between the B & E of LIBERTY. I have a hand full of them I keep just because they are different, who knows maybe someday I will have one for every year!

The 1960 small date cents suffered a lot of die chipping. Thus the need for the large date cents. But this on is a large date with a large chip on the 9. So it can happen even though best intentions try to eliminate the problem. It is just a part of a die life to suffer die cracks/clashes/chips/break and finally Cuds and retirement.

Could this coin be the rpm listed on cc as rpm # 10. It looks like a faint D to the north of the mintmark. I know it has a filled r in liberty and the 9 on this coin .appears to be early stage of a die chip.

Hi,

It's not the RPM #10 on coppercoins, as the mintmark on your coin is much lower than the one on cc. On your coin, the mintmark is below the bottom of the tail of the 9, while on #10, the top of the mintmark is quite a bit above the bottom of the tail of the 9.

I do see what you are seeing though, but cant tell for sure if it is an RPM. But with 173 listings for RPM's on coppercoins, it may be tough to find a match.

I would save it for now. I don't see a listing that matches it on coppercoins. The shape looks to small to from a mint mark punch. But I would keep it save till we know more about it.It is not nice enough to send it because of it's condition. They like a close to BU as possible to list. But still looks interesting.

Ok, great advice! I would not mind sending it to someone who could take a better look at it for public archives. I would want it back afterwards of course.
