One person picked it up. The color in the picture is very representative of how the coin looks.

Interesting. It does look a little off. I'd have guessed it was from a weak strike+old cleaning and called it MS60 or MS62 cleaned.
I'd never have guessed AU55 plated!

Possibly an MS coin that was net graded because of plating? (Hate those words "Net Graded")

I guess that is why I am still learning and don't like buying MS from photo's, if it is not graded. Still can't see the wear, but net grading really stinks. What does plated mean?

Quote: Possibly an MS coin that was net graded because of plating? (Hate those words "Net Graded") I doubt it, I see a little wear on the beard and also, when they net grade don't they do a straight no details grade that is lwered due to damage, cleaning etc. Quote: (Hate those words "Net Graded") AMEN!

PW, the coin would have been coated (likely dipped) by or into a thin layer of another alloy. In this case gold plate (possibly brass). It must have been done long ago with the coin seeing some circulation after words. All my theory, someone else can chime in.

Brush plating can be done with silver or gold-----but this is something else--very pleasing to the eye---somewhat AT. The coin is not AU.
