I need to update my Charlton's 63rd catalog and wanted to know what would be the Best Charlton Catalog/Price list for Varieties, especially for 5 Cents.

I want to send 5 cent coins in for grading to ICCS but if the variety is not listed in Charlton's they will apparently leave out the designation. I want to know I'm safe to send them out without them bouncing back w/out the variety listed on the slab.

Any opinion's out there from experienced variety 'ICCS' Graders..?

Thanks for the help.

ICCS has been inconsistent in the last 2 years with recognizing varieties. If the coin is worth it, grade at ICCS then cross to CCCS for variety. There is no "best" book on the 5 cent varieties. Ken email me if you want my list. MM

Thanks ReyJey2000...but I'm a collector ...and not an expert here..

...but listen to MM (nickelsguy) as one of the experts here....

If I wanted a variety added and was in doubt.. I would include a "straight forward letter" with the pieces and explain the variety and in detail what you wanted ( book and page references etc...)

If they refuse to comply..have them returned ..untouched..

I would also call and talk to Scott or Brian before they started the work..

That way you've covered your bases as best as possible....

If they say no,..then you take your toys back and go home..

64th Edition is the one you'll need for Victorian 5 cent varieties. For other eras, I guess the more recent the better.

My LCS knows I focus mainly on 5 cent silver pieces, esp. varieties and showed me a book the other day called "Canadian Coins and Their Varieties". There was one volume for decimals and one for dollar coins up to the million dollar gold coin. I was pleased as there were many varieties that weren't listed in the Charlton so I put one on order. I was able to get a 40% discount through my LCS. I think the regular price was 45$ but there was a lot of great info in it and may be worth it to you. Not sure how much sway this book would have into convincing ICCS but it wouldn't hurt.
