Here is a die I once owned that shows the TI of MONTICELLO. This die was cancelled via puddling with a torch. The "S" indicates it was from San Francisco. These got out of the Mint circa 1968. Edited by koinpro 05/26/2015 7:44 pm

That's interesting. What does the 870 mean?

Ouch... that hurts just looking at it.
Why would they destroy it to such a degree?

The 870 is the unique serial number. Cascade, this is better than grinding away the entire face.

The ones I've seen have an X through them. But aside from yours I've only seen classics

Cascade, This is the way they grind the face of the die now. Never mind the punch marks. That was me experimenting to see how hard the die steel was or how long it took to destroy my punch.

Try some nic-a-date, maybe it will restore the die!

It's important to note that this is not a proof die. The 1968 proof dies from San Francisco seem to be more available. Both are still relatively common though.

Ahh, I see said the blind man to his deaf dog... wait, no, I don't see anything. I like the nic-a-die idea though

Yes, a lot of these got out. I had hundreds of them. Most are now gone.
