From the photos you have posted, it looks like a match to 1DO-002. Can you get a straight on shot of the complete date and mint mark?

Ah, yes, I'll try - it's my iPhone and I have awful lighting (hence the angled shots, for which I apologise). The mm does look to be in the identical position though, I forgot to mention that.

Nice find. May want to wait for others to confirm it, but it looks like a match to me.

That's not the same coin. Check CC's site. John1

When I first looked at the coin, I thought MD. That's when I looked at CC's (as I mentioned in the OP) and it looks like this one: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/...ie_state=mdsSo, is mine just MD that looks like the coin in the link (which would have fooled me into thinking MD for that one too)?

Well guess what. I did an overlay and it is a dead on match for this die number. So it is 1963D-1DO-002. Note on the second image: the lower left edge of the 9 is rounded and not shelf like. They look like machine damaged coins, but it when rounded, they are hub doubled examples. Also deceiving is the lack of enlargement of these examples. So look closely for roundness and flat edge on the areas in question. It is a CLASS 4 + 8 which are different than the other doubled dies we are used to seeing.

Looking at the coin in hand, I can see what you mean about the roundness vs shelf-like. Without checking coppercoins, I would have dismissed this one though. Great learning experience and I appreciate the help (a lot).
It seemed ironic that I looked through almost 1000 wheats and found nothing and this was sitting behind me all along.

Funny you should mention that. I bought a roll of 1960-D small date circulated cents years ago. after several of years I decided to check them. I found a 1960D-1MM-100-1960D-1DO-001 in that circulated roll. The reason I didn't search them right away. I was buying a lot of BU rolls of coins from the show. When they dried up, then I check the roll. I had purchased a BU example a few years earlier. But nice to find one myself.
