I'm a sucker for a nice Proof 3CN. I have 17/25 of the series and have in mind to possible pick up 1 or 2 in the uncoming year. I was astounded to see that virtually all of the 1880's PF65 wholesales bids have fallen from the last month. What the heck!? I don't exactly find them plentiful and the ones I do find are not exactly ones I'm anxious to take home. I'm hoping that means there might be some buying opportunities (although I only need 1 from the 1880's...1882...and the 1860-70's have largely maintained their pricing).

On the note of 3CN...whaddya guys think of this one from Legend? http://www.legendcoin.com/cgi-bin/i...ent%20Nickel I've been resisting the urge to call them about it. I understand that it has been on their site for awhile.

Its a real nice coin !

I have to believe that the scratch on the obverse and hazing on the reverse are on the slab ?

The reason for this is actually simple:
Prethen's 3CN Photos = increased prices
Lack of 3CN photos = decrease in prices

Prethen...that is a good looking coin. (I'm assuming they are telling the truth that the blemishes are on the holder.) The strike does appear to be very strong. As always, I find it difficult to accurately gauge mirror finishes from just one pair of photos. If you get it, we can all look forward to some great shots.

I have a hard time coming up with descent reasons for some price fluctuations that aren't obvious. I can however say that the 3CN from Legend looks like a winner and the blemishes do look like they are on the holder. If you get it, please post some pics!

Prethen, I'm a sucker for cameoed coins and to me that is an exceptional Proof 3CN. Considering it's on the Legend site, I'll bet it's as nice or nicer in hand.

Hi, Prethen!

I have always felt the 3CNs have been undervalued. The design is beautiful IMO and a 3 Cent denomination is a really cool/unusual coin to own. The proofs and business strikes are very scarce, and priced extremely low when you factor in age and mintage quantities.

Really it comes down to the demand just not being there. I have a couple of theories as to why that is.

1: The 3 Cent denomination, because it's unusual, tends to be overlooked.

2: Because so many years have such few mintage quantities, completing an entire set is a daunting task. I remember trying to buy the 1885 (business strike) as an investment piece. After scouring the earth for a month I could not find ONE! I'm willing to bet if, say, only two or three years of the 3CN were scarce the 1885 would be worth triple its current market value.

A tip of the hat to any of you who have completed the entire 3CN series!
