I found this coin today in a bulk lot I bought per Kg..
The Krause catalog mentioned that "most issues were melted down before circulation"..

When I did an internet search not much shows up, numista.com noted it as rare..

So I guess this is my "find of the week"..

The Israelis replaced the lira with the (old) sheqel on 23rd February 1980, which explains both the low mintage that year and the melting-down of most of that small mintage.

Not a particularly valuable "key date", but a key date nonetheless.

Value I do not care.. I collect coins by year.. So it's a nice addition..

I noticed the low value given in my 5 year old Krause...
But in that same book it gives the 1 Fen 1981 from China a low value.. (expensive coin!!) and there are a lot more errors..

Part of the problem with Israeli coins is, I think, that the date is not easily readable by a Westerner who is only familiar with "Western" letters and numbers. Collecting Israel by date will never be as popular in the West as collecting, say, Canada, or even China. So there is much less "demand" to drive up prices for rare date Israeli coins.

It is a nice coin. It is not so rare, yet that year a large number were circulated, but some melted. There is no shortage of these coins in Israel. It is a nice addition to the collection. If you need other Israel coins just contact me.
