In some of the reading I have been doing.
It is noted that the First Texas rangers had their badges made from
Mexican 5 peso silver coins minted somewhere between 1870 and 1890.

Texas-Rangers
do any of you have images or pictures of these coins your could post.

thought this might be a topic of interest.

Please do not post pictures or "replica badges"

I am interested in the Coins used.

Mexico did not mint a silver 5 peso until 1947, up until 1920 all 5 pesos were gold.

Here is some information you may not have encountered in your research, a portion of which is from the organization that the modern Texas Rangers belong to, The Texas Department of Public Safety:

The only large silver-dollar-sized silver coins struck by Mexico in the period 1870-1890 were "cap-and-rays" 8 reales trade coins. Example on NGC.

This dealer appears to have what you're looking for, and you might inquire for a photo of the back. I don't think that this Ranger badge would be inexpensive.

Here's a dealer that carries a lot of old west badges that might be of help. They have a lot of stock, none of which is listed on-line.

As Sap implies, the early badges were almost certainly 8R's, the readily available badge-sized coin of the time and place. The later badges (such as the one I linked, with a map of the state of Texas, and the ones shown on the Ranger site), would have been made with modern silver 5 pesos. Pre 1900 Old West badges of any sort are highly sought - the Ranger badges are museum pieces.

Simply put, the badges are conchos with cutouts. Most of the coin design on the back of the concho is destroyed by hammering into the dished die.

Here are some examples with datable coins (1888 and 1893). The author calls them pesos - they appear to be 8Rs.

Quote:
History does not record who, when, or where, but at some point a Texas Ranger, perhaps adhering to Childress's measure, pulled his long knife and carved a star in a silver Mexican eight real piece. (The Mexican government did not begin minting silver cinco pesos until 1947, but it produced two other silver denominations earlier, an eight real coin [1824-1897] and a one peso coin (1898-1909]). The story may even be apocryphal, but a photograph taken in 1888 of Ranger Walter Durbin shows what has come to be called a star-in-the-wheel badge on his chest.

And wouldn't you just know I have three of these in my collection.

Thanks for all of your input.
