I would say a little bit of everything listed for some. For me right now the joy in collecting is being able to hold a piece of history and once in awhile I try to imagine what this coin has been through and who has held it over the 100+years. That in itself makes the hobby worthwhile, for me at least. Then if you can trace a coins pedigree back some, that makes it even more interesting.

Very well put. I agree, I like to think who's hands a coin has passed through. If coins could talk...

First, I unlocked the poll. No sense having a poll if no one can vote. Second, I moved it to a more appropriate forum. to the Community!

I voted '' for the fun of it ''. I love U.S. coins but lately it's becoming an obsession with me, like an addiction I guess. oh well my 2nd choice would have been ''to hand down to my children ''

I was tied between that (for the fun of it) and history.

Do we have to vote for only one of the choices?

For me, just for the fun of it. BUT In the back of my mind I know it's sort of like saving for a rainy day. There's value there that can be converted to cash. No, not likely the amount that I originally paid (investment coins cost 6 or more figures).

There needs to be an "all of the above" button. I like the hobby for all the reasons listed above. It's like this...after the 18th hole, when I play a round of golf, all of the cart fees and green fee money is gone. Yes, I may have had some good laughs and made some good memories but the actual money is gone. When I buy a coin that I like, a really appreciate the history and I hopefully can pass it down to my kids one day, but if I should need to sell it then I should be able to get most of my money back. It's not really an investment but coin collecting leaves you in a better position that a lot of hobbies in my opinion.

Fun / History /with a small eye towards possible investment in certain cases.

I think my reasons have changed over the years I've collected. When I first started in High School, it was to invest in my future. After school, and before getting married, it was a part future investment and fun. After getting married it became more something to pass down to the kids and a bit of a distraction from everyday ups and downs. Now that my son collects too, it's father/son time many people don't get to do nowadays.

For me it started out as a fascination of the designs on the old coins and the reasons why the mintages varied from year to year. One learns a lot about the economic history a country through the mintages of its coins. Then it became a challenge to fill a folder of Barber, Mercury, and Roosevelt dimes, albums of Washington quarters, Franklin halves and a type set of the classic commemoratives. Now it is mostly for the thrill of finding that certain coin for a type set or to fill a no longer in production coin holder. I like the older Capital Plastics holders as they have none or very little of what I consider personally modern mint made garbage but, that is my opinion and you have the right to accept or reject it. What post 1964 coins I have are in rare obsolete Capital Plastics holders and it is the rarity of the holder itself is why I bought it not because I actively collect the ugly coins it was made for and as long as I have it then fill it. Something different than plugging dozens/hundreds of the same looking coins with different dates into multiple folders or albums.

I collect for the fun of it and I enjoy the history. I like to see what I can find out there, and if I don't know what something is, I enjoy trying to figure it out. I also like the fact that if I get sick of doing it, I can sell what I don't want and get most of what I spent back (hopefully ).
