A guy I know collects coins like I do. Today, he showed me a Morgan dollar, some 1920's British pennies, and a few Franklin halves. I asked him where he got them, and he said they were from a neighbor. But get this: he asked the neighbor for the coins, rather than being given them without asking. The guy who received the coins says he asked if he could have them for his collection, the neighbor handed them over for that, but I have a feeling he'll try to sell them for some quick cash. Is that an acceptable way of getting money, or did the guy technically scam the neighbor out of his collection?

I feel like it is kind of scamming them, but hey, they gave him the coins.

Well, the thing with ethics is who decides what is ethical.

I think you already know what you find ethical or you would not ask this question.

If that happened to me I too would ask the neighbor for them. At the very least I would give him face for face but most likely I would at least tell the neighbor they are silver or whatnot and see how it goes from there. If he takes face for face then great if not maybe spot price but at least that choice would be given to him.

I would try not to pre judge the guy. Even if he does sell them, you don't really know what happened between him and the person he got the coins from, you weren't there. Yeah he might do something unethical. I certainly wouldn't ask for a coin for my collection for free and then sell it. It's his business though. I just try and keep my side of the street clean.

I see nothing wrong with what he did. I too ask friends, neighbors, etc. for any old coins. I do usually give them face value for what is usually just normal coins. So far seldom ever get anything of value. Just regular coins they put aside from change.

Well if you think about it, all the neighbor had to do was say no. Also, the guy you know is not lying even if he sells the coins he could use the money to buy coins he wants. There is one thing in life that holds true, if you desire something you need to ask for it, and if you don't ask you won't receive it. From an ethical standpoint, I would say the guy you know should have offered to at least pay the neighbor for the coins. I don't consider the neighbor getting scammed here because the neighbor willingly gave the coins away. What a weird scenario though, would never hand over my coins to anyone! That's just crazy!

There is probably more to the story, so I will reserve judgment. However, the story as-is makes me feel a little uneasy. Too many questions about the circumstances.

Did he do something unlawful? No, but bad ..... bad karma.

What is the difference between someone who asks someone who doesn't know better, for coins that THEY know have value. And someone who over values coins to sell to someone who doesn't know better.

IF he lied to get the coins, by telling the neighbor the coins were going into his collection rather than his real intent which was to sell them, then yes, your friend obtained the coins under false pretenses. He took advantage of the good nature of his neighbor and used deception to make a profit, which is reprehensible and speaks volumes about his character. I would treat this friend with a great deal of caution in the future. There's no reason why he wouldn't scam you too if given the opportunity.

I hope they really going into his collection like he said. Time will show the truth.

Well he got them for FREE, so he essentially scammed the neighbor out, people have given me coins for free, but never a Morgan dollar or a half.

Hater's gonna hate. I don't think he did anything wrong by getting coins for FREE. Now if he lied to acquire the coins, well then, that would be a different story...

Honestly, some neighbors are nicer than others.
Maybe he cut this guys grass or shoveled his driveway year after year for him?
Either way, he asked & was given the coins...
Hopefully he does keep them for his collection & won't sell them for a quick buck because they were from his neighbor.
