US Mint - The United States Mint announced today that Mary N. Lannin of San Rafael, Calif. has been appointed as Chairperson of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) effective immediately.

Ms. Lannin, who replaces outgoing Chairperson Gary Marks, was appointed as a CCAC member in 2014 based on the recommendation of the House Minority Leader. Marks will remain a member of the CCAC until his term expires later this year.

A freelance editor with developed skills in numismatic publication, Ms. Lannin has worked with authors from the United States, Canada, Germany, and Greece.

She is a life member of both the American Numismatic Society and American Numismatic Association, and is currently a member of the Royal Numismatic Society, the Swiss Numismatic Society, the San Francisco Ancient Numismatic Society, and the New York Numismatic Club.

Ms. Lannin is a member of the Ancient Arts Council of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco), the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is a volunteer staff member at the Legion of Honor, currently evaluating the 50 most valuable holdings for the museum and the City of San Francisco.

Ms. Lannin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota (1969) and attended Trinity College, Washington D.C.

The CCAC was established in 2003 by Public Law 108-15 to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on theme and design proposals relating to circulating coinage, bullion coinage, Congressional Gold Medals, and national and other medals produced by the United States Mint. The CCAC also makes recommendations to the Secretary on the events, persons, or places commemorated on, as well as the mintage levels and proposed designs for, commemorative coins. The CCAC submits a report annually to Congress and the Secretary describing its activities and providing its recommendations.

I am always optimistic when there is a change of leadership.

I hope Ms. Lannin will prove my optimism right.

....... and one with a substantial background in the arts. Does that mean the quality of design in our commemoratives is going greatly improve ?

Again, optimism. I have it until given a good reason to not have it.

Don't count on it. I believe several of the members have arts backgrounds, but a lot of stuff called "Art" in my opinion leaves a lot to be desired.
