Hello again!

I used to be a member here a few years back but I forgot my username. I will make a into post later. I will say that I am happy to see so many familiar folks!

My question:

I have moved to Europe and there are no LCS that I can find within about a two hour drive. Not that I am overly interested in foreign coins anyway. LOL

As such, I am looking for ideas of small sets that I could find slabbed that will not cost an arm and a leg. Perhaps not to exceed 25 dollars each coin.

If that is not possible, I am open to other suggestions. My main concern with graded coins is that I will be buying based on pic only and buying slabbed will reduce my risk.

My kid and I are also starting an UNCIRC and possibly proof set of Statehood Quarters that I plan on getting directly out of mint and proof sets. That should be a fun project for both of us as it is a set the kid picked out.

Thank you for your time and I am glad to be back!

I have always heard to buy the coin and not the holder and this seems to contradict that. I guess if you were to do a set of slabbed coins, Proof Presidential dollars are pretty cheap. I got this one for less than $10. It is graded PR-69

What's your birth year? Perhaps a set of coins in mint state from that year?

CoinCollector, That is very sound advice! I think maybe I am just a little put off about buying raw coins over the internet. I do not own any slabbed coins. I need to do some research on the presidential series. LOL

Saint, I had not considered that. It is a brilliant idea! Maybe I can expand it to cover the kids birth year.

Welcome back. Not sure what your sources could be in Spain for any US coins. However, if you still know people here in the USA, you may ask them to go to a coin show if possible. At those coin shows I see slabbed coins all the time. Some dealers have over 50% of all their coins in slabs. And some are really cheap. It appears that many people send in coins for slabbing with no idea what they are really worth and end up with a $1 coin in a $15 slab. Then those are eventually sold for a few dollars. Best place for looking at and buying slabbed coins. Unfortunately since your in Spain, this may not help you. You could try the internet but I have no idea what postage, handling, insurances would cost to get them to you.

Haha Carl, you gave me a duh moment! LOL The family lives back in the states, I could probably as them to make a special trip sometime.

Shipping is not any more difficult that sending to anywhere in the states because all personal mail goes from USPS to the military mail service. Just remember to pack a little more carefully when shipping to an FPO or APO because things sometimes get handled a bit rough. lol

If you add the kid, might as well consider adding the kid's other parent. You can expand to grandparents too. I've been planning to start a similar project, hence the suggestion.

And once you decide on what "slabbed coins" to collect, you could place said collection in a binder like this:

I love these ideas! I think I might just do the birth year sets. Thank you for the album link, it looks pretty good.

What do you guys think about a high grade common-semi key date Lincoln type set including chronicles and shield? I think that might make a pretty nice looking set.
