I just bought one of each! Just as a frame of reference, is it dumb to buy coins directly from the mint or is it better to wait for them to go into "circulation" and hope the price goes down a bit?

Congrats on the purchase! The three US Marshal Service coins make for a very attractive set.

Regarding the "best" approach to purchasing new US Mint releases, I will venture to say you are going to hear from supporters on both sides of the fence: direct purchase vs. secondary market purchase.

Personally, I enjoy buying the new releases directly from the US Mint. I know that I will be getting "fresh" coins without any handling damage, and, if there is a problem with a coin, I can always return them without a hassle. I also enjoy keeping my collection current and sharing the new coins with others at my coin club meetings.

While it's true that some (even most) of the issues can later be purchased at a discount, it's not always the case. Some issues have risen in value in the secondary market, especially some of the lower mintage gold coins and silver dollars. The 1996 Atlanta Olympic silver dollars and gold half eagles, the 1997 Jackie Robinson gold half eagle, the 2000 Library of Congress $10 coin and the 2001 American Buffalo silver dollar are just a few examples.

Over the years, I would say my preference for making direct purchases vs. purchasing in the secondary market has actually saved me a few bucks.

Just my experience, others will have a different perspective. Good luck with whichever approach you take!

I stopped buying the 5 oz quarters, they are still selling them for 149.00 while the spot price of silver is less then 17.00

I agree. I also have this problem with waiting.

Nice purchase!

I really want to get that gold U.S. Marshals issue... not sure it's going to happen this year.

How about some pics of your coins, durkastani?
