Because it is deep into the die, the most pressure affects die the most in that area. I've seen as many as nine different die cracks in that area before.

Open a roll of 1955 cents and you'll have a field day fining these. In the old days they called them Cracked Skulls.

I think all the "Poor Man's Double Dies" had cracked skulls didn't they?

The poor mans Doubled Dies and Die cracks in general are both symptoms of an ageing/deteriorating die. That said I haven't taken note if most " Poor Mans DD's" were found with cracked skulls.
