So, I'm buying a coin I've always wanted (1903 Philippines peso) and I want to encapsulate it with an acrylic screw capsule.

It's VF grade.

The next few coins I'll get for my collection are 1). MS grade Morgan silver dollar, and 2). Old Spanish eight reals.

My question is then, since I'll buy them from someone who has touched it with they're hands, should or could I gently clean them to remove oil from fingers before I put them in their capsules?

Or just put them straight in, because I know you shouldn't clean coins?

Please help me with this.

Appreciate it.

It's my general practice to rinse each new raw coin in acetone with that in mind. There are things which could be clinging to the coin but as yet unnoticed which could be bad in the long term. Fingerprints don't appear for a few days, for instance, and in that time acetone can remove them.

So consistent with the rules of safety required with its' use, I always rinse new coins. There may be exceptions to the rule in the case of coins with a lot of crud on them - the surface under the crud which the acetone might remove has aged at a slower rate than the exposed surfaces, and the resulting surfaces would be contrasting and obviously cleaned. But those are exceptions.

Not sure where your at if Acetone is available but if so, get some for the reasons mentioned by SuperDdave. Acetone will not harm coins. You can look Acetone right here by using the Search tab. And as to encapulating coins, I just put mine in Albums.

Caution: Acetone will harm plastic slabs. Even splashed droplets. Try some on scrap plastic and you'll see what it can do.

Chute is correct. If you're going to use Acetone, be sure to wash the coin thoroughly and pat dry.

No need to wash and pat dry. Rinse in fresh acetone and let it evaporate. Using fresh acetone for the rinse is key, or else it will leave behind whatever is dissolved into the (not fresh) acetone.
