I'm relatively new to this forum and am interested in collecting Mexican coins. Is there a good reference book that someone could suggest? My main interest is in coins from the late 1800s to the present. Thanks!

I use A Guide Book of Mexican Coins by Buttrey and Hubbard published by Whitman books. The only problem is that the last printing was 1986. If you just want to ID and price the coins you could try Krause: http://www.amazon.com/Coins-Prices-...03258&sr=8-3

Metalman, Thanks for the offer. I will certainly take you up on it at some point. Right now I'm trying to figure out what Mexican coins I have and what direction to go in terms of a collection. Basically I accumulated a large number of coins, ranging in dates from 1930-1998, while I was doing field work in Mexico in the early 90s. These are all from circulation and probably contain nothing special. Still, I'm interested in Mexican history and the coins provide a nice link to that. Once I get my bearings, I'll drop you a line with lots (hopefully not too many) of questions. :-)
Best, Patrick

patrick - Welcome - I also specialize in Mexican coins, but focus on the earlier issues and their counterfeit varieties. I personally love the pre-1857 issues that were used in the US and constituted the majority of the circulating coinage in the US in the pre-Civil War era.
Richard Long did a book a bit ago on the decimal issues that you might find interesting. It gives some data on population that is not elsewhere available.
The decimal issues tend to be a little more "identical" than I like, but there are a few overdates and some interesting varieties. You also might look into mint errors. They are prevalent and far cheaper than US errors.

Thanks to everyone for such great information! I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions once the books you've suggested arrive and I've had time to digest all the information.
swamperbob, thanks for the suggestion about the Richard Long book. Do you have a title I can search on? Also, thanks for suggesting I look into mint errors. I'll start exploring that as well!

Patrick - Sorry for the delay. The Long books is: Long, R.A. The Availability of 20th Cent. Mexican Coins Not only a catalog with prices in 7 grades but detailed analysis date by date of grading and price history 268p, 8.5x11", sc, 2nd Ed, 1976 This listing is from Scott Semans website - the book lists at $15. http://www.coincoin.com/bkEph.htm#LATINIt is the only book of the type and even though it is now somewhat dated the information is not available elsewhere.
