Anyone going to buy the Sputnik coin which shows the satellite actually moving around an image of the earth? Do you think they will sell out quickly?

Wow! Fifty years ago!
I remember it very well. I was 11 years old.

It was terrifying!

The Communists had conquered outer space with a 2-foot beeping tin ball.

I would like for this to be a Russian coin instead of something from Western Australia though. I also think Sergey Korolyev is worthy of commemoration, he was the developer of their early rocket programme, and worked through incredible pressure from the Commie masters in the Kremlin.

Russia issued a Korolyev collector coin this year, in January:

The launch of the Sputnik will be commemorated on a different coin (3 rubles, 1 oz), scheduled for the "second half" of this year. Don't know whether that piece has already been issued or not ...

Ukraine also issued a Korolyev piece, it seems:

I like that orbital coin, but it's beyond my price range. It is a great idea, though.

I think this coin is kinda gimmicky, but that's o.k. by me..

The description of it in this month's World Coin News indicates that the colorized reverse portrays the satelite appearing to revolve around a view of the Earth as seen from space, and, rather than being housed in a plastic capsule, the coin is coated with a transparent wear-resistant finish that allows you to manually activate the coin's design without contaminating its proof surface. Activate the design? So it's a coin you can actually play with.

I'll bet it does sell out quickly, even at $77-78 U.S.

Here is the Sputnik coin from Czechia - one you would not play with but still a neat design:

For some odd reason the forum software modifies the URL that I posted, and I have not found a way to fix that. So use this link instead ...

... and click on "Proceed to this site"; that should take you to the page with the images.

Kazakhstan has minted two coins in 2006 and 2007 in bimetal - silver and tantalum. Pretty interesting metal choice.

I bought Cook Isl and Fidji Sputnik coins !

Sputnik-50th-Anniversary

Earth on center is moving. As mintage is 25,000 it is not very difficult to find.

Sputnik-50th-Anniversary

This coin with mintage 6,000 is more difficult to find now and price is going to increase. I saw more than $100 (I bought it for $78).
Happy new year for all !
