I purchased three of these State Quarters at a public auction a few years back only because they were graded MS-70 and I had not seen this grade used before. All three are really great looking coins with the satan finish and they look absolutely mark free but is MS-70 even obtainable? Is this a circulation coin or did it come from some type of US mint set? Cheers, Bill

SGS has a less-than-reliable reputation - here`s one example: https://goccf.com/t/80892That is a nice looking quarter though, someone more familiar can say if it`s from a mint set.

The satin coins were only produced for mint sets so that is where this coin originated.
MS-70 is obtainable although very rare. SGS is not really a top-tier slab - they have a reputation for overgrading so while these are indeed nice examples, they are most likely not MS-70 coins. Still nice though!

I'd say that coin is MS-70. Awesome coin! Best coin I've ever seen!
I admit bias.

It might be an MS70, but only because of luck on the part of SGS. I would never consider buying it unless it was extremely reasonably priced.

These were purchased at a small country auction in Ontario and I think the price was OK there were three coins in the lot and I got the lot for $4.00 + Tax total $4.52. Also with the above coin was South Dakota and Nevada. I really like the the Nevada reverse with the Horses.
Cheers, Bill

The bar to make MS-70 is incredibly high. Everything has to be perfect - strike, marks, luster must be flawless. There are very few of them out there. More typically of a mint set coin would be MS-67 with some 68's and maybe the occasional 69. I am not an expert on State Quarters but the coin shown probably makes MS-68 which is pretty dang nice.

What you bought was a BU State Quarter in a No Good Slab. Coin most likely would Not Grade MS70 by any of the top 3 grading companies. Show it to a local coin dealer and see what he says. Good Luck !!

I just opened some uncirculated sets and I have to admit some of them are the nicest quarters I have ever seen and look like the OP's above. I will put pics of a few later. On a few I can't see a visible hit anywhere. Don't have a magnifying glass or anything but who knows.

I agree , your quarter is nice but not MS-70 in my book. however if you got 3 slabbed State Quarters for 4.52 you did great.
