Kinda new to coin collecting. Can someone tell me what they think this coin would grade at? Also, what are the differences between MS-61 to MS-65 grades? Thanks much.

to CCF. I think your Morgan would be around MS63ish based on the scans. The best way to see the difference between the MS grades of a Morgan is to visit PCGS photo-grade. http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Morgan/Grades

Welcome. Your coin grades MS63. Coins that have never been in general circulation are considered uncirculated and can grade from MS60 to MS70. There are very subtle differences between each grade and takes some time to be able to distinquish these subtleties. Strike; eye appeal; toning; luster and defects such as rub or scratches play a role. You can see these differences by viewing them at pcgs.com/photograde. Your coin exhibits an average strike for this year. The eagle breasted is a little weak though. The reverse has decent luster with some minor abrasions. This side would grade 64. The obverse luster appears to be broken across the cheek and neck with moderate chatter in this areas. Most likely from banging against other coins at some point. It grades 63. I usually give preference to the obverse grade as that is usually what is displayed. Hope that helps

There are focal points obverse face and cheek and reverse eagle breast and wing area....obverse face has some scratches on it and the reverse is a bit better than the obverse I'd say 63 like the others

Firstly, let me say to you.

ditto on the 63

Also let me mention that you have a very nice coin here.

Just in case you are unfamiliar with MS-designated coins and its intricacies it is important to stress that at the transition point into the lowest mint state classification an MS-60 coin cannot have any wear or clues of circulation whatsoever.

At this lowest MS level graders do tolerate 'moderate' scratches, bag mark dings, scuff marks, and a total lack of luster; believe it or not the vast majority of graders do NOT ('and should not') consider these aspects as 'wear' or signs of circulation at 60.

Obviously, if a scratch, for example, is excessively large or deep enough, variations in grader's judgements naturally begin to emerge...

I did not know that... So bag marks, scratches post mint, or negligence at all on a coin will instantly make it < MS60?
