A few weeks ago I sent my report card in to the ANA to join the coins for a's program, which also gets you 6 months of gold status membership for free. I recived my coin today, and it is a 1978 50 New Pence peice! Awesome! Can't wait to submit coins to NGC! Can't wait to do a lot of cool things! Anyways, just thought i'd share another in my coin collecting life.

to the club, we're glad to have you!

Now go borrow (and read :-)) a book from the ANA library - it's the most underutilized resource!

I have never sent in a coin for grading. I'm a little chicken. I have 10-20 waiting to go I would love to hear your experience 1st hand. Congrats on this milestone. I think I am going gold with both ANA and PCGS in the next few months.

I've done several submissions to NGC albeit mostly at shows (to save the postage and so the rep can check it first). It really is simple... after you get your submitters number.

Go through you coins and figure out what you want to submit.

Make a list. Make sure everything is eligible for the same service - if you have one $5000 coin (nice to be you), you can't submit it with a bunch of $200 coins on Economy service. You just need to do multiple invoices but you can ship them all together.

Go to the NGC site and click to the collector's society part and to the on-line submission application. Fill it out until you get to the part where it asks you to list your coins.

Flip over to notepad or something like that and make a page to print labels.

nnnnnnn-001
1932S Lincoln Wheat cent

2015.032

(where nnnnnnn is the NGC invoice# and the 2015.032 is my catalog # (NGC ignores it))

Print out the page, cut out the labels to fit in your 2x2 (small coins) or 2.5x2.5 (larger) (if you have even one larger coin - half or Morgan/Peace) use only 2.5x2.5s.

Now one by one, I enter the data in the NGC invoice
Put the paper label in one side of the flip
Removing the coin from current protective casing and place it carefully into the flip
put flip aside in sequence

repeat

When all are done, click through to the next page of the wizard and review everything line by line. ESPECIALLY checkboxes for variety plus, etc.

Keep going all the way to the final printing (credit card #, etc.).

Use a rubber band to hold the stack of flips together (not too tight or you risk bending thin coins, but not so loosely that they will fall out). Then take the 3 copies for NGC you printed and rubberband them around the stack (again not too tightly).

Put in a box, use peanuts or similar to protect, mail (with insurance and signature confirmation)

and wait
wait
wait

In a couple days you'll get confirmation and then a day or two later you will see your invoice on the NGC site with the "received" notation.

wait
wait
create a browser shortcut
wait

promise yourself you will check only every couple days

realize you are lying

check AM (in case it was updated overnight)
check PM (in case it was updated during the day)

wait

drag browser shortcut to the desktop to save the extra two clicks

wait
wait
wait

What do you mean browser that this is my favorite link of all time?

wait
wait
wait

keep watching as the status moves

wait
wait

WOW - grade posted... view them... really? Yes! Groan! No way! Yes!

wait for USPS

wait
wait
wait

They'll be here tomorrow

Drat I will be at work

Get the delivery notice

wait until Saturday

go to PO to pick up - OMG what a line...

wait

Give slip to clerk

wait
wait

We can't find it... oh, it's registered, it's in the vault - have to find the postmaster - he has the key

wait

Get box

Run out of PO

Moral dilemma: Do I open it in the car? Or --- guess the word --- WAIT until I get home.

Told you it was simple...

What do you receive if you enter the Coins for A's?

Gold program? What are the full benefits of this?

Thanks! I'd like to try this out.

Congrats! I joined as a junior member in 1976 and both of my sons joined as YN's. Make sure you apply for a scholarship to next year's summer seminar. It is the best way a coin geek can spend a week in the summer. Also, along with coins for A's, look into the David R. Cervin ancient coin project and the early American copper coins project.
