The rim above the F of the word OF took a hit first and gave that area a bit of protection from whatever came latter. PSD

The reverse dies are not as deep of a design as the obverse dies on the most coins. Thus when you see a very worn coin, the reverse are weaker than the obverse side of the worn coin. Probably spent some time in a casino.
