What would you call this? The ink is yellow! There were no "yellow seal" notes were there? I'm curious what to call this, and if it's common.

Some dry cleaning solutions have been know to do this to red seal notes.

It is not a BEP produced error.

I know I will get railroaded for this but I think this is a legit error. why? because the serial number and seal are the only things affected. you can say it was confined just to those areas but the words this note is legal tender for all debts public and private is not affected in any way. also the discoloration of the bill is evenly done through circulation. if it was altered you would see it affected the bill as well and it is not present on this bill. it looks like it was printed with the ink used on the gold certificates.

The ink used for the serial number and seal does not have the same chemical composition as the ink used for the portrait, frame and text. The red ink used for serial numbers and the seal does not have to be chemically treated to fade in this way. Sunlight and other environmental effects will do the same thing. You will not find a legitimate currency TPG that will call this an error.

Although 1934 gold certificates were being produced at the same time as the 1928D United States Notes, the idea that there was an error in the ink used on this $2.00 is highly unlikely. It would have meant that the entire print run was printed with the wrong ink. Not something that would have been missed in QC.

also possible that some people (way back when) thought they could get away with trading this in at a bank for 2 Gold $1 coins !! Nice try...
