I came across a five coin lot on ebay Spain, but unfortunately, came across it less than a minute before the auction ended.

There was a coin that didn't look familiar to me. I didn't have time to figure out what it was and my last minute attempt at a bid didn't beat the clock. The lot sold for 21 euros.

The coin turns out to be a quarter follis of Maxentius. From the past auctions listed on acsearch.info, it doesn't appear to be an overly rare coin, but it's one I've not seen before.

Here are the auction photos and a link to acsearch.info.

That's one of the great things about collecting ancients. You can always come across something new.

That has happened to me several times.Sorry you missed it. The good news is that there are plenty more interesting ancients out there.

Interesting coin. If you look closely at the picture it looks like it might have be over-struck on another coin. There seems to be signs of a legend on the out edge at 2 o'clock on the obverse, and on the reverse there also seems what looks like a legend on either side of the mint mark.

Yes we all have missed out at one time or another.

In my case it was also while loitering on ebay Spain.
Lucernae had a rough looking sestertius listed as Gordian III.
I was puzzled my the mature look of the portrait. With but seconds to go I barely made out the letters AFR.
On a quiet night when the air is still ........... you can still hear my voice echoing through the seven hills of Worcester.

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhh !

It went for $10 !

It was rough and the coin had seen its best days long ago.
But the complete legend was just visible.

I mentioned it to Antonio around two weeks later. His reaction was much the same as mine !
The buyer didn't even know as he had not made payment after 14 days.

Told him I would pay him double !

Strange ........ never got a response

Not much to look at really.
But for $10 you can't go wrong !
Unless you miss the boat that is !

The fact that the legend is legible (with some effort) makes it well worth having.
The fact that some 'boob' picked it up not even knowing.
Well that hurts !
