I posted this on Chucks site but wanted to share here also as this will probably be a good learning experience. I was going through my "keeper" roll ( I filled it up once again) and remembered finding a few of these in a BU roll. I think I set it aside as the mint mark looked like an RPM (I think it is, maybe -021?) At first glance it looks like a 7, but we know that is impossible as the dates were not punched but were on the master die. I then started looking for which RPM this could be, I started noticing all of the "D's" that were erratically punched all over for this date and thought "could it be?".

Here is the first picture, notice the 2 gouges in the upper left side of the 5, they even look like serifs.

I cut the mint mark out and photoshopped it to where those marks were-

Just thought I would share and make sure I was not crazy for thinking it was possible.

The mint mark would be punched after the die was cut and therefor if this were to happen the "D" would be above the 5 and show on its surface. For it to happen the way you speculate they would have to punch the mint mark first and then hope that the die was cut properly around it.

Ziggy, I thought that too but started thinking what the die looks like, the digits are recessed (the opposite of how they appear on the cent), so it is very possible this could happen. Its hard to explain but over on Chucks site I learned this is a well known die. I am just happy there were 6 in my roll!

Ziggy - Your explanation is exactly opposite. Only if the mintmark were punched first would it show on the subsequently hubbed letters. Remember the dies are opposite in relief from the coins...the fields are the highest parts.

chrsb - Been through things a number of times with that particular die, and it's the consensus of the group that the marks on that die are die damage, not a repunched date, and not a repunched mintmark.
