Had a very frustrating situation arise just now.

I was bidding on a coin from a Canadian seller, and was careful to check the CAD/USD conversion rates supplied by ebay and other internet sources so I could set my maximum bid such that it would not exceed my current account balance if won.

Well, it turns out that I did win. However, when I go to checkout with Paypal, I find that they have their own conversion rate (higher of course ), such that it sends my total a few dollars over balance.

I sent a message to the seller to explain the situation, and hopefully he understands. I will have to wait at least 3 days now to clear extra funds.

I accept that I am partially to blame for cutting it so close in the first place, but I really was not expecting Paypal to gouge me on rates like that. Let this serve as a warning to others who might make the same mistake .

Actually, a little more research revealed that Paypal charges an extra 2.5% on all CAD/USD exchanges. It's probably in their terms somewhere so I suppose that's really on me for not knowing. Doesn't make it any less annoying though.

I've bought from Canadian sellers several times in the past, but I suppose those were smaller amounts that didn't cause such a noticeable difference in price.

We are a Canadian seller and we only want US dollars. Listing in Canadian dollars is silly anyways. You get way more response and business listing in USD.Never having to convert currencies saves a ton of headaches. Hope it all works out for you. PayPal and ebay are both currencies conversion bandits.
