I was contacted by a buyer of a $30 coin today asking for a refund because he says the coin, mailed on June 1, was lost by the USPS. He said he contacted the postal service and has documentation to prove this. However, USPS tracking shows the coin was delivered "in/at mailbox" on June 3. I've emailed the buyer asking what the documentation is that he has, but haven't heard back yet. I'm going to contact ebay tonight to talk about this. I don't want to have someone try and pull a fast one on me claiming that a coin that was delivered was not. Can I be made to refund the price if tracking shows the coin was delivered? Am I responsible should the package have been taken from his mailbox? I'm looking for any help or advice people may have before phoning ebay. Thanks. Paul Bulgerin

USPS might have just put it in the wrong mailbox?

Yes, or it was stolen from mailbox.

Do you have the tracking number? ebay will likely refund you even if it shows as delivered to your confirmed address and you don't have it. The thing is: Does it show delivered to your address? If not then you still get a refund of course but the seller loses the case (& money). Reason I ask is that your post states, "The seller says...". Not that you have the proof of delivery.

I used ebay shipping so I have the tracking number. USPS tracking says, "Delivered in/at mailbox" on June 3. I would hope that I am not responsible once the package is in the buyer's mailbox.

Sorry, I misread your OP. Even if the buyer claims to have documentation "proving" the item was lost as long as you have tracking data showing it was delivered then you win the case hands down.

Thanks. That makes me feel better.
I still haven't heard back from the buyer about his documentation.
I don't know why USPS would say they lost the coin if tracking shows it was delivered.
Here is what the buyer emailed me:
"I did not receive the item I contacted the USPS and was informed that item was lost on their end. I have documentation proving this."

Sounds like your buyer is confused. Once the tracking shows delivered, he can not win if he opens an INR case. You can sympathize with his plight but once delivered it his responsibility.
As far as your curiosity goes, you can look up the post office by the zip code. call that post office and tell them you are being told the package was "lost" (explain the situation)and give them the tracking number. see what you get for info.
This is only for your curiosity...your not responsible for it.
I have called PO"s all over the US when I have had small glitch, you would be surprised at the helpfulness of most places.
just food for thought.

Tell him to open a case and let ebay handle it. Again, this is why ebay has a system in place to handle these types of situations.

The buyer wrote back and said this: "Unfortunately, they ( ebay) will not be able to tell you what is going on; all they know is that I have not received the coin and that you played no part in the loss of the shipment. Also, I have no documentation from USPS concerning this matter. They simply insist that the package was delivered. At one point, they even claimed that it was signed for. Apparently they are no longer making that assertion, but they will not acknowledge any possibility that the shipment is lost. I know for certain that the carrier had two ebay packages when he was pulling my mail out of a pile he had partly sorted before arriving at my mailbox. I saw them as he was riffling through the mail he had set aside for delivery. He was working quickly, so I did not attempt to see every piece that went into the pile that he folded and handed to me. I found later that there was only one ebay package in what he gave me." He acknowledges I played no part in the loss of the coin and that the letter carrier handed the mail to him. I responded that I would talk to ebay, but didn't see how I was responsible for refunding his money since USPS says the coin was delivered.

Have him file an INR dispute with ebay and let them handle it. As far as you are concerned, once the package shows "delivered" it is the Buyer's problem. All you can do is offer the Buyer a sympathic ear and be polite and professional. Since you have viewable online tracking from "point of origen to point of delivery" (usually Zipcode to Zipcode) you are covered according to ebay's "Seller Protection Policy". The only thing that could bolster your position would be "signature delivery confirmation", but it is not required at that level of value. Be polite and sympathetic, but firm in your position. Good luck.!

I think you are playing a bit too defensive here. Imagine you were on the other end. You don't have a coin that you payed for. What do you do? What would you expect the seller to do?

The coin may still show up. It may have been delivered to the wrong mail box. This happened to me once, at least I assume, as I had a tracked package (coin) show delivered and it was not in my mail box. It arrived two or three days later.

I spoke with ebay this afternoon and, after checking out the facts, they closed the case in my favor. They said they will contact the buyer to let him know what he can do. The representative with whom I spoke said that if he is an ebay member in good standing he can appeal for a refund from ebay.

Sounds like a good resolution. I've learned to phone ebay on all sorts of stuff. They're really helpful and they will contact buyers on my behalf. Keep doing the right thing. Even if it doesn't pay off now.
