Found this bill a few years ago and noticed a blue circled "E" on the right. After asking my local bank and emailing the mint, I haven't gotten a good answer. The mint told me it must have been added while in circulation but I'm skeptical. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

Looks like it has been stamped. Probably some sort of bank/teller stamp. Definitely post-BEP.

Thanks for the input WheatBack. Beyond spotting silver half-dollars, I'm inexperienced in things of this nature. I suppose I'll keep my day job since I'm not sitting on a million-dollar bank note.

Stamps like these are very common on $20, 50, and 100 notes. They are the modern equivalent of a chop mark--the cashier stamps them to signal to the cash office that the bill's authenticity has been verified.

As for why it's on a $1 note, think bored 16 year old cashier on a slow business day with a stack of bills and a stamp...
