Do you use any type of software for your coins? If so, what do you use and its purpose? I've previewed coin software a couple years ago and I wasn't impressed with the selections available. FYI: I am re-directing my career back into computer programming and it will take me about a year to become marketable. In the mean time, I plan on developing software for my coin collection as I progress through my training. It will probably take me 6 months to come out with a beta-version. Once that project is complete, I'll work on a companion mobile app. Any suggestions of what you'd want to to see in coin software? or how it functions? Thanks in advance for your input.

One thing that would be cool is to be able to upload a spreadsheet and have a "prettier" display of the data.

I use Filemaker Pro to keep track of my numismatic books, magazines, and auction catalogs. I used to use it to run a DB of my coins as well, but then the computers were slow and couldn't keep up with loading the images I had, may try to rebuild it again someday.

I use a free program called OpenNumismat - does everything I need and lots more. I would post a link, but I don't think I'm allowed to yet :-)

This probably won't help you much but I use Bento, which is the poorer man's version of Filemaker. Of course a year after I paid my $20 or $30 I learned that Filemaker is no longer supporting Bento! My luck! However, it works just fine with my new Mac and it's new Yosemite operating system. It is easy to use and you can create all of your own categories and include photos as well. I enjoy it and probably haven't even explored most of its capabilities.

What you need is some thing that will allow you to record more than one coin for that year. 1967 1 cent P with 1 to 12 different grades

I use Exact Change for US and non-US. In particular, I like the ability to have different collections saved as different files (e.g., US, general non-US, Canada-only, recent acquisitions, etc.), the coin pictures for identification of non-US coins, the ability to generate so many different types of reports of the collections, and the ability to associate individual notes/comments with each coin entry that then show up in the reports (if you want it to).

Longtime spreadsheet user. I have not found the need to use anything else.

My real issue is in the various varieties for a single year, so I need to re-work my old database now that the computers can handle the graphics and photo loading so much better than they did in the mid 90's when I first made one. Example; my 2¢ collection I have well over 300 1864 LM's alone, most are all different, a few are the same. I'd really like to get it working with the latest Filemaker Pro that allows to link to iPhone and iPads for use when I'm at coin shows. Having a database of each variety I already own, with photos would keep me from buying the same ones I already have - DOH!

Ah, yes, I could see the need for a variety collector to have a more powerful software tool at their disposal. I should have mentioned that I am a typical album hole filler, so what I have and what I need are easier to list.

I use an app called US Coin Collector. The full version is only $10. It runs on my iPhone and my iPad and I can backup and restore via Dropbox so that I can always keep them synced. I love having my collection with me when I am at a coin store, show, or flea market/yard sale. It is fairly basic but it suits my needs and the developer is very responsive to feature requests.

CoinManage 2015 is what I use. Nicely full featured with lots of report options and the ability to design your own reports and add additional coin varieties into the database with images as well. Not as cheap as some ($39.95 for a new user) but works pretty well and is fun to keep updated. My Galaxy SIII has a simple app called Coin Collection that is fine for keeping track of circulation issues (does not provide checkboxes for proof only issues).

Are you ever worried about keeping your coins listed on an online database where someone could gain access and see everything you own...that might be worth stealing?

Another case for the simple spreadsheet.
