I got a very strange call today, some guy talking fast- gave his name as 'Lee Marshall' and claimed to be with the 'Houston numismatic Exchange'. I knew it was an aggressive sales call so I headed him off by telling him I never discuss my collection over the phone with people I do not know nor do I buy anything from those people- he was talking over me when I hung up. Before I did he was telling me this would be 'the greatest call of your life.'
I checked on line, there is a company by this name and they have a web site but although there is a link to click on to email them there is no way to send them one.
Has anyone else received a call from these people? Someone has sure been peddling my name and # lately- this is I think the third call from telemarketers in the past couple months. Just curious what's going on..

I have heard of them but have never been called by them. I stay away from cold calling telemarketers no matter what they are trying to unload.

All it takes is for one company (or telemarketer) to sell your number to a marketing list and you have lost a little more of your privacy.

If they are calling you on your cell phone you should be able to block the number they are calling you from. Other than that, you have to change your number but that brings a whole other set of problems to the table.

I agree, you should be careful who you tell what to over the phone, especially if you don't know them.

Two points. I did not actually discuss my collection, only telling him I never discuss such things to strangers over the phone. I misspoke earlier when commenting that I referred to 'my collection'.

We long ago registered for the do not call list- and did so again about a year ago- it does little good. These people still call 4-5 times daily. They use all kinds of dodges to get around the law on this, usually saying they are a non profit or something.

The following could be another thread topic but I also get irked by coin dealers who send me mailings with references to 'Your collection' on the envelope. I have noticed Stack's, of all people is doing this on some of their mailings. You'd think they'd know better. Probably some PR firm is handling their auction publicity.

Download an app called Mr. Number and you will not be bothered by them again. If they do manage to get through you can just add them to the list of blocked numbers with just a touch of the screen. Best app I have on my phone.

1. Never, ever tell anyone over the phone that you collect coins, stamps, guns, etc.
2. Always ask whoever is calling where they got your number
3. Always state that this call is being recorded for safety purposes and legal information.
Note: companies do this today to you.
4. Do as Jerry Sinefeld did on one of his programs. Ask the caller for HIS home phone number and you'll call him there to make deals.
5. On such calls if you really want to have some fun, simply say "You've called the Better Buisness Bureau, please give us your company name, address and phone number"

In Austria I have a unique solution: " Bitte sprechen Sie Englisch?" Sometimes they even hang up without even saying "BYE"

Sometimes I wait a minute or so as they're just getting their sales pitch going and hang up.

Other times I hang up if I don't recognize the voice after 10 seconds.

I would have said, "I don't have arthritis yet, but when I do get it I will look into my local drugstore for a remedy", then hung up on them.

I just bet the next thing was he would ask for a credit card number. I do not even talk to the bank if they call with an offer, and point out they originated the call. I usually say if you want me to look at some offer, mail it, you should have the address, and give nothing out.

Kind of reminds me of a friend of mine. Whenever there is a petition person or persons outside of the supermarket, they ask if he would sign a petition for this or that.
He tells them "I'd love to but I'm a convicted Felon".
He's not but you should see the look on their faces!
