Hey,
I always have difficulty with the type 1 vs type 2 1981 coins. I have 6 or 7 that I would appreciate any input on.

They are a lot harder than the 1979 differences. But here is what to look for:

Note the ends of the mint marks. (the shape of the ends) This will help you. These ends are wider. Also the centers are open on the upper and lower loops on the type 2. Type ones are almost closed.

All denominations used the same mintmark punches for the 1979 and 1981 issues.

Are you sure? because the Cherry Pickers Guide has each denominations type one and type two, and we all know how they hate to waste a page on anything that's not worth the space.

That is because there was a type 1 and 2 because they used the same mint mark punches. This happens on all denominations of coins. A damaged punch you can see on all the dies the different punches were used.
