Maybe I'm very late to the game, but after contemplating it for a few days, I decided to see what would happen when I put coins in the vending machine and see what I would get back. It never occurred to me that you don't get the same coin back when you get them returned. I also noticed my vending machine doesn't give back dimes, so when I would put in 3 nickels (all I had on me at the time), I would get 3 nickels back! I decided to have fun with it for about 3 or 4 repetitions until I got a 1952D nickel as change! I know it's not worth much, but I only found 4 pre-1960 nickels in the last time I searched 10 rolls of nickels, so I was excited. In case you were wondering, I did this near closing hours where there was no-one around to see my goofy behavior. Now if only it were possible for this method to yield silver coins! Have you found any unconventional or peculiar ways to collect coins as well?

Hahah that's awesome! Our machines are all in 25 cent increments (or maybe just the ones in my area?) so we only get quarters back. I should totally try that.

I did this for a while in high school (which wasn't THAT long ago...) until I was chased out of the cafeteria by the janitor. He was convinced that I was trying to cheat the machine into giving me a quarter back instead of a nickel. What you might consider doing is marking the edges of your first coin with a sharpie so that you know that you have hit a full cycle. I used to "cycle" nickels all the time and put together a pretty good circulation set doing it.

I found a pop machine that dispensed dollar coins once by accident. All I had was a $20 and NEEDED a Diet Coke! I received $18.50 in change, expecting a whole bunch of quarters but got back 8 SBA's and 10 mixed Golden Dollars along with a Bicentennial quarter. I bought another pop later from the same machine and got back 3 more SBA's and 15 more mixed Goldens with a couple unremarkable quarters. I tend to save SBA's and Bicentennial Quarters and did so here. It took me a while however to get rid of the Golden Dollars. I think eventually I just tossed most of them in my change jar and cashed them in with the rest of my junk change.

By accident, I found out the soft drink vending machine at work will return you quarters if you put in a couple of bills. So, I do this from time to time looking for National Park quarters. I then use the quarters I don't want to get my drink.

Fun find. About 10~15 years ago I would buy stamps (post office vending machine) with a twenty dollar bill just to get baby dollars to look through. That ended when the "upgraded" to a new electronic payment only machine.

I tried this at the vending machine at my old job, but I gave up after it ate a dollar's worth of quarters. Figured it was easier to just walk than try to explain to my boss why I was spending my break feeding coins into the vending machine and not buying anything. I think I did get a couple ATB and a North Mariana quarter before that happened.

I've actually been doing this for quarters to try to find all the National Park ones. After I buy something I rotate 2-3 quarters through about 5 times to see if I can get anything. I've found a few that way, as well as some 2009's which are pretty rare in circulation.

Sure do. I did this once a couple months ago and got a 38-S Jeff in the return slot. Very nice.
