I hear the term 2x2 this and 2x2 that, but what exactly is being talked about. Is it a 2x2 mylar flip, or a 2x2 cardboard/mylar holder that you staple? I did an ebay search and both came up. Thanks. Ed

Typically the cardboard 2 inch by 2 inch holder that is stapled. That is what is meant by a 2x2. At least in my opinion.

In my opinion it's the 2" by 2" cardboard flips that house a coin.

In my definition book, a 2x2 is: Any cardboard coin flip used to hold a coin. This includes 2.5x2.5's also.

The term '2x2' (on its own with no other qualifiers) usually refers to the folding cardboard and Mylar* coin holder.

The clear folding all-plastic flip comes in a 2x2 size and is sometimes (mistakenly) called a 2x2 (with no other qualifiers), but 'flip' (alone) seems more prevalent.

Then there are those who say 2x2 cardboard flip (instead of holder).

Confused yet?

In my opinion, it is best to be as specific as possible, so I try to refer to them as 2x2 cardboard holders and 2x2 plastic flips.

* For what it is worth, I generally try to avoid using Mylar as a genericized trademark. The actual material is BoPET (Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate).

When I mention a 2X2, I am talking about cardboard holders for coins that measure 2 inches by 2 inches. These are a cheap and popular way to store coins.

For me, a "2x2" means the cardboard flip (white on the outside) that you staple, although I have used self-adhesive ones in the distant past.

A "flip" is the all clear storage device with a pocket inside each cover and is of the same dimensions.

There are also 1.5x1.5 holders for coins with a diameter less than ~20mm and there are 2.5x2.5 holders, more commonly referred to as "Crown" holders for their ability to hold large silver denominations that do not fit in a standard 2x2.

both are 2x2 and fit in the same pages and boxes, so it really doesn't matter. I usually say cardboard 2x2 or 2x2 flip to differentiate.
