I never had good pics of this coin to share, as I was trying to handle it as little as possible before sending it for grading through Heritage. It's now up for sale with some excellent pics. Here are a couple grabs of Heritage's pics (I hope that's OK): It's from a collection inherited from my father. At the request of family, I've been working diligently to sell off a portion of the collection, with the help of the CCF community. I ended up deciding to keep a number of valuable gold and silver coins. While this one was certainly one of the stars of his collection, I decided to sell it to make the family happy and because it didn't fit as well with the other 1840's and later gold coins. It's unfortunate that it graded UNC Tooled, but it's still a very valuable coin. I'm excited to see how it does next month at Heritage! Here's the link if you want to check it out: http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-.../1222-3303.s

Quote: Where do they see tooled marks on the coin I don't see anything out of the ordinary Here is the description from Heritage: "1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. BD-2 is one of the more plentiful 1800 half eagle varieties, ideal for date representation; as many as 175 to 250 pieces are believed to survive. This unworn example displays significant semiprooflike mirroring in the fields amid bright yellow-gold patina. Trivial softness is seen on the eagle's neck and Liberty's central hair curls, but the strike is otherwise well-executed and the eye appeal is notably strong. A few insignificant tool marks are seen on the top of Liberty's cap and near the L in LIBERTY, hardly a concern for the unaided eye. Faint remnants of a few adjustment marks appear briefly along the lower-left obverse border." I guess PCGS is talking about the marks near the "L"...maybe they are more apparent in the huge version of the pic on the Heritage site. Maybe this link will work: http://coins.ha.com/c/lot-image.zx?...&id=12778030

Just realized where the marks were. That is crazy that they would give it a tooled grade.

Hi, When I looked at the Heritage site with the PCGS slab the close-up of the obverse showed a few very fine horizontal scratches. What % of these scratches are on the obverse coin itself vs being on the obverse surface of the slab? I think this coin is still awesome no matter what the response is.

I'm not sure how to answer the question as I don't have the coin in hand and didn't really get to examine it very closely when I did have it. I do believe the line at around 7pm on the obverse is on the coin. Many of the lighter lines may be on the slab, although it is a relatively new slab...the coin was recently graded. The close up pics of the coin itself are probably giving the most accurate detail of what is actually on the coin itself. I wish you were grading the coin...that details grade is probably going to cost me many thousands.

I suppose with a coin of this value that Heritage has to be especially vigilant in their description. Besides, that's just the kind of company that Heritage is (in my experience).

Great coin. Even with the "tooling".
