I recently sent five coins to NGC for grading. This one came back "Not Encapsulated" Plated I called NGC when I saw the status online, they said they do not slab plated coins.

Had to break this into two post ... Because I can't get by spell checker on my IPad. It hangs up on "img" Below is how the coin came back. I think they are saying it is a 1788 Bust right Vermont But they won't encapsulate the coin because they say it is plated.

The other four coins, I am very happy with.
On this one, I wish they would have at least put authentic and the RR29 that I paid them to put on the label.
Any opinions welcome

If they went so far as to take your money and print the label, they could have at least put it in the better plastic. Oh well. Lesson learned. At least you have some confirmation on it.

They should at least refund the attribution costs that you paid for.....since they did not attribute it.

Interesting piece. Why anyone would plate a Vermont is beyond me. I agree with jbuck, they printed you a label with a bar code and stick it in a flip? It's pretty worn but has anyone tried to attribute this coin?

So what does the plated mean? I understand in regards to gold and silver plating but is that what is up with this one too?

Yeah its really annoying that they didn't attribute it for you but there's no mistaking that's a ryder 29. Only coin to look like that. Have you considered contacting them for the attribution fee reimbursment?

Another reason I dislike TPGs. IMHO, I feel slabbed coins are for people who are too lazy to do research on a coin before they buy it. They are making ignorant and lazy collectors out of this trend. Id be raising heck to get that attribution fee back if it were me.

Send it to PCGS they will at least holder it with a Genuine label that states plated.

keep it in your pocket as a lucky charm, maybe one day the plating will wear off. I think a slab would have been nice tho. you paid for it .

I do wonder if there is some way to remove the plating.
Would be better to have a cleaned coin .. in a holder ..

Yup, RR29. Fantastic coin and I am quite jealous because Vermont Coppers are my specialty. Man, I didn't think they'd bag it!
Try PCGS as stated. This needs to be attributed in plastic (I know some will disagree). This is a pretty important coin.

Do you think you would try to remove the plating?
Would having the coin tested in a IR x-ray machine tell me anything?
