Well thanks for informing me that it's fake. Maybe I'm just gonna keep it as a replica.

I wish you wouldn't handle coins like that. Touching the surface with your acidic and oily fingers Lol. Most fingers are oily and acidic.

Ancient coins are not like modern one, they are meant to be handled the oils from the fingers will not hurt them at all.

Before I saw the pictures of the coin edge on, I could see that this piece was a tourist fake.
I was unfamiliar with the style and the surface texture looks 'sus'.
Edge pictures of a mold join confirmed my suspicions.

Nevertheless I would still buy this piece for a couple of dollars, and add it to my collection of fake ancient coins, of which I have about 100.
This collection is part of my self education in learning how to identify them as fakes.

Thanks for posting this. I'm sure this will help clarify what a casting seam looks like for some new collectors here. Unfortunately most fake casts will not have this profound of an example. Most have only traces visible under extremely high magnification.

If you want to learn some basics about casts and spotting them, recently did a blog post last week on our site. Not sure how to add a link so just scroll down on the home page at http://www.ancientgalleonllc.com if you want. Very basic but it will show you two extremes between a genuine struck coin and one that is cast such as yours.

Sometimes, the casting seam and molding sprue are filed off, and the whole coin plated over.

Is it true that this kind of coin is amongst the finest of all Sicilian coins? Especially Syracuse?

This type is beautiful for sure and as a decadrachm a rare coin. But as far as being the finest Syracuse is know to have produced some very beautiful coins which personally fell are nicer than this type. You might find this an interesting read about Kimon decadrachms. http://www.kimoncoins.com/kimondek.html
