I have told you that I have a coin dealer that is a good friend too... What I have not said till now is that we are thinking in making a trip to buy ancient coins in the countries of the former Yugoeslavia so we need to contact with ancient coins dealers at those countries... Do you know Ancient coins dealers in western Europe (Former Yugoslavia)? Edited by Athalbert 06/15/2015 2:23 pm

I don't know of any dealers that I would trust in that part of the world. You see sellers on ebay from that region that sell nothing but fake coins. Though I'm sure there probably are sellers of genuine coins there, but I think you are going to need a lot of luck finding them.

Well.... let me say it for the record. In a world with access to ancient coins in so many venues why would anyone, indeed someone it would seem with limited knowledge of dealers, travel across Europe to the former Yugoslavia to attempt to buy coins from dealers. Not only would I reiterate the highly accurate and spot on fact that Echizento just brought up, but finding said legitimate dealer, what possible incredible deal would await you? I never met a coin dealer anywhere, even legitimate ones that did not attempt to secure the highest price possible, usually five to ten times what they paid for it, on any coin worth having.
By the way, some of you may be coin dealers, and might be offended by that last bit. I don't mean it as insult just old fashioned capitalism in action. My 95 year old grandfather has been a dealer for seventy years, as was my father. I spent my life around coin dealers here in L.A and everyone of them would concede that point.

I am the last guy you should be listening to Athalbert, so take this with a grain of salt.
You know your coin stuff from what I can tell. As long as you are physically safe, which I am sure you can judge for yourself while in the situation, go for it.
The fruit grows on the limb of the tree, venture out on that limb and get yourself some fruit. The pickings may be sweet, just don't get hurt in the process. The branches tend to get thin out where the fruit is so the margin for error is low.

I have been shooted in former Yugoslavia, I have been shooted by Somali pirats in front of Somalian coast... ...Iīm not a hero, in my mind "no fear heroes" are equal to stupids. A hero is someone that knows the fear, but he choose to do the right thing, what he must do. My friend makes money travelling a lot, looking for coin lots from metal detectorist, other dealers, collectors etc... but... ...he never takes any stupid risk. But Iīm very happy to receive pieces of advices from all you, and of course Iīm not offended...
THANK YOU ALL

Athalbert don't listen about this "stupid" risk. I take this risk often too but it's worth it. In home we learn that mistakes and risk are bad, and we are punished for making them. If you have knowledge this is not risk but pleasure. In these countries there are so many not dealers but metal detectorists with a lot of coins . If you want advice you can send me private email.

Well if you are looking for large lots of detector finds than you are going to the right place. Most if not all of the bag lots of uncleaned coins come from that region. There was a time when I would buy bags of 1000 uncleaned coins. Out of a 1000 coins I would be lucky to come up with 300 good collectible or sell able coins. Back than the lots were cheap and I didn't lose money, but now the price has shot way up so I don't see it worth buying lots of uncleaned coins.

Personally, .. I'd be wary. I know there's some controversy about buying ancient artefacts but you need to consider the risks that you will be buying fakes, supporting illegal activities or contributing to the loss of archaeological and historical information: For instance, see here: http://paul-barford.blogspot.co.uk/...uy-that.htmlYou find a guy who has a few coins who introduces you to a guy who knows a guy and .. you find yourself in a garage full of boxes of coins and artefacts. Do you go whoopee and think of the money you could make selling them on ebay? Or do you pause and wonder exactly where all this stuff came from? Metal detecting finds? OK. But how about if you discovered they were from a looted museum? Or stolen from someone's collection during the wars? You're paying a guy for spending hours in the baking sun digging things out of a field? Or someone selling artefacts to fund arms dealing, drugs, gangs or worse ... How will you know? You may be safe, but how will you know that what you do is helping, not harming others? Just my point of view of course... .

No worries on this type of stuff with me. I don't view it as funding anything, I view it as giving a great piece of history a home it deserves.

TG, Perhaps you are right, but... Are you really sure that the petrol/gas of your car donīt come from an ISIS source? Are you absolutely sure that all your coins never were stolen from anyone?

I can't be any more sure about my petrol than anyone else in the UK...
But all my coins are UK purchased most have provenance going back over 20 years, in some cases longer, so I feel I'm doing what I can.
It's not meant to upset anyone, just I know that I wouldn't feel comfortable buying from places like Serbia for the same reason I don't buy bootleg DVDs...
