I'm not clear on the date of this florin. Also what would be the grade? Any guesses? Thanks.

I believe the date on your Queen Victoria florin, converted from Roman numerals, is 1884. No expert on grading but would suggest VF.

the coin appears AU+ IF REAL, I am the farthest from an expert you can get when it comes to most world coins but that coin and its details just don't sit right with me...really hope I am wrong though.
Feel free to call me Will.

dollarman, my dad picked it up almost 40 years ago and stored it away in an album I only recently found. Included in the album were a number of other florins from mid-to late 1800s. Also a couple of Crowns which I have up for sale on ebay. It would surprise me if the '84 wasn't real. What gives you pause about the coin?

There have been some exceptionally excellent fakes of the Gothic Crown that have been produced.
Wonghinghi may be able to comment on this issue.
Under these circumstances, I have nowhere near enough expertise to pick the dud ones, when it comes to the Crowns.

This particular florin IMO, is a really nice genuine example.

Datewise I agree with 1884.

sel, thanks for your comments. What grade would you give it? EF? AU?

Looks OK to me. I'd say EF by British grading standards - there is a little wear on the highest points like the jewels in the crown and the faces of the lions in the English shields.

Thanks NumisRob. I see what you mean by wear on the faces of the lions. One lion's face resembles his rear end. In terms of value? I'm keeping the coin but I'm just curious. Thoughts?

Apologies for making this comment but it looks fake to me... I collected these for a while and I can say I would definitely be cautious with this one. I hope I'm wrong

Hi Beeston. Why would you say it's fake without giving any evidence? This to me is irresponsible.

Kafka, if you re-read my comment, I said it LOOKS fake. To me, it does look fake..that is not irresponsible, it is my opinion.

The obverse just doesn't look right, to me at least. I cannot put my finger on what it is exactly that doesn't look right, else sure, I would have added more info in my response.

Sometimes, it is a bit hard to pick the difference between wear and a light strike on lions' and leopards' faces on British coins, where there is little or no patination.
The face and the band on the crown on the left hand side of the picture are especially indistinct; perhaps a bit of grease may have come between die and planchet.

Looks like a close match to an 1884 florin pictured on Heritage. If it's a counterfeit it appears pretty convincing. How's the weight? Should be around 11.33 grams or so I think.
Gradewise looks very close to unc, at least by USA standards. Looks like it has some light hairlines on the obverse but does not appear harshly cleaned.
