When I first saw this, I thought it was a lamination. It was pretty dirty so I rinsed it off with warm soapy water and upon closer inspection, I saw that it had a small piece of tape on it.
I removed the tape and this is the result. The details under the tape were protected from corrosion, while the rest of the cent started to rot away. There is a distinct difference where the tape was.
If I had found this cent after someone had already removed the tape, I'm not sure what I would make of it.
Anyway, I just thought it was interesting.

The surface under the tape looks great - I recommend all collectors start taping their coins as a means of preservation

Best to keep the surfaces protected in a 2X2 or hard flip. I know one collector who kept an older roll in mineral oil for years to keep air off of them. Seems like an extreme way to protect his coins. Don't use the soft flips. They contain PVC and in time discolor your coins. Albums can turn coins a different color and the ones with the plastic shields can scratch the tops of the devices from sliding over them. I prefer 2X2's.

Cascade , looking at your Morgan my first thought was it was in some kind of money clip that acted as a sacrificial metal. Copper maybe

I actually posted a Jefferson a little while back cwb, thinking it was a Lam. It really looked just like one. Turned out to be scotch tape.
