Either it's just an unplated fake, or something went wrong.

The third digit looks off compared to normal 1914 D's.

What could even cause this?

Well poop, the seller has another fake coin for sale.

I'll probably make a separate thread on classic coins pointing this out.

I'm not going to say the coin in the first listing is genuine, but based on the pictures I can't prove it otherwise. Besides the color, which could have many environmental causes, what makes you so sure it's fake?

The Mercury dime is a definite fake; the portrait details are way off compared to a genuine example.

Most likely a cast fake, the pics are so bad it's hard to tell. I wouldn't give him 99 cents for it.

The Merc fake is absolutely pityful, you'll know it when you see it....it really is that bad, not even close to a real one.

The 14-D looks okay to my eye. Looking at the reverse, it was perhaps plated at some point, and that is now starting to flake off.

It's a fake. There have been a bunch of fake early S, 22 "p" and 31 S cents showing up recently all from the same reverse die. This 14 D is also from that same reverse. Note the lump on the left wheat sheath just above the U in UNITED
Why-Is-This-

The image is copied from the auction so when the auction goes the image will most likely as well.
