After looking at some of the posts that fellow CCF members have posted of their finds, I am wondering- am I just that unlucky or am I missing anything- why do I keep getting only new coins from roll hunting? I went through 10 boxes of pennies, 2 boxes of dimes, 3 boxes of nickels, 7 boxes of quarters, and 2 boxes of halves and the only thing I found worth mentioning were 4 silver quarters (all 1964 ) 2 silver dimes, 1 silver half and a bunch of wheat pennies. I see people finding walking liberties, Indian heads, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes and the like. Are there any other methods of finding rare, valuable coins other than roll hunting; if so, what are they? (Other than buying them ) Am I just so unlucky or am I doing anything wrong? Also, sometimes I feel like showing off my collection but I would look like a complete looser if I do . *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Hang in there. CHR is a LONG game. There are people here who have searched thousands of rolls before they have had a big winning streak (if ever). You have to "Love The Hunt". Keep at it!

It's a #'s game... I'd imagine your finds would be considered above average to most. The dream boxes that you see posted are sometimes mid 20+ box skunk streak. Keep at it and good luck!

Agree with above.
Often folks post only the successes or items of note/interest, not the, uh, non-successes or dull, boring boxes. So you are not seeing a representative cross section of *all* the hunts in the coin roll hunting game. You're just seeing the ones worth posting. Now if the mint would go through a couple of years of low mintage, that might result in more "successes" in this game, or at least the perception that there will be more success (but see the elusive 2009 nickel).
Note the thread titles--"finds"

exactly, as stated above, if you would like an example of my day, after work at 4:30, I go to the bank, then I drive to another (this is an average weekday), some days I add in a dump bank as well.
on Saturday morning, I am out the door at 7:30 to be at my first bank at 8am, then I proceed to go to 26 or so different banks till about 4pm, I stop around 11:30 and search some of my quarters, and do a dump.
On Sunday, I am out again going to one of my dump banks at about noon, go to 7 or 8 banks and I am back home around 2;30 3 pm
I regularly turn over $4K to $5K in Quarters a week, $2k to $2500 in Dimes and a few hundred in Nickels and Pennies.
As they say, Go big or Go Home.

As they say, Go big or Go Home. Holy crap! What is your "keeper" rate? What do you do with the stuff you do keep?

for silver I was averaging about $2 a week, nickels are low, I am only looking for pre 1950, and pennies, I am looking for only pre 53 KG5 cents (Canadian coinage)
also I keep all USA coinage, and use them when I cross the border
however this year I have had 3 major scores, finding $360 (Face value silver), $25 (face value silver) and just over $25 (face value silver) so these 3 scores really skew the averages
The stuff I keep I have not really tried to sell yet, because the spot price is low now, I want to wait till its over $20, then I will sell off some.

Would you recommend searching for silver in quarters, dimes, nickels, or halves? I think dimes and nickels are time consuming, but then again, maybe people don't hunt those for that reason. Sometimes I do a box of pennies to fill my albums.

The nice thing about silver hunting in the US is that you can do it a lot quicker by edge-checking. With that said, I love Canadian coins and bought a couple Cent boxes right after it was announce they would be dropped (Sorted and kept all of them...)
I did buy a few loose rolls of Canadian coins the last time I was there but I had to limit myself since the CFO/wife knew I wouldn't return any of them. I also made as many purchases with paper as I could to get change back. I am pretty sure she figured it out but she pretended not to notice. With the ones I did buy up north I didn't get any silver but did find a few nickel pieces.

Most with regular 'scores' are big-time CRH enthusiasts. They turn thousands of dollars in coin weekly. The average CRH enthusiast gets a few better boxes a year and maybe a great box or two. Rather the exception to get real old or rare coinage on a CRH event. As noted, you do it for the possibility and entertainment.
Keep your expectations realistic and your disappointment will be kept in check. Good luck!!

Hello There,
You found 4 silver quarters?! That's great. My son has only found two in CRH and one in change at work in many years of searching.
It takes a long time to build a collection. Keep at it.
