Just wondering if anyone can recommend some good coin shops in central Vienna? I have found two just walking around, but both would rank as the two top rude coin shops I have ever visited. The last one I was in I quietly looked for about 3 minutes (no questions or conversation) and the proprietor rather sharply told me that she was not a museum. I have no idea where that came from. I told her I was not looking for a museum. I left a minute later and she slammed and locked the door behind me......

Welcome to Vienna You have run into the famous Viennese manners....it takes a little getting used to. You will find in Europe many coin shops expect you to know exactly what you are looking for. More in line with your shopping style: Karlsplaz underground station..look for the Oper exit near there is one coin shop suggest you look in the windows( the shop is in the underground shopping area) Their English is abysmal but they will help) the other is HD Rauch... they have a tiny shop on the Graben almost directly opposite the plague pillar. The actual shop is small but they are Vienna's largest Auction house for coins. At the end of the Graben( opposite end to Stephansdom) there is a very small pedestrian street. Half way down on the right is a shop that encourages browsing. ( couple of nice local cafes down there where the Viennese have their lunches. Many of the shops assistants can understand English but are embarrassed speaking it. Be patient and ignore the apparent rudeness remeber they are viennese not Austrians ( viennese are to Austria what New Yorkers are to the USA). They are not rude just very different to what English speakers are used to. They suddenly switch to being very helpful if you don't react to the initial "welcoming(not) salvo" One final place is Dorotheum (a good guide book should tell you where is is. Its a huge Auction house on the mezzanine floor is a small area for coins and stamps( you have to take the stairs as the lift doesn't go to that level ( only two flights of shallow stairs) Its well worth looking at what is on sale in the other departments. I guess you only here a few days in the mornign I am off to Colorado springs Otherwise would have offered to be a guide

Austrokiwi,

Ok, thanks for the guidance and explanation!. I will be here a few more days and I will try to find some of the other shops and bring a few of my other collecting friends along that are here with me.

Have safe travels to Colorado.

I went to Vienna and went to a coin show, it was quite big and I bought everything I wanted. Better than coin shops.
