I came across these 1954 $20 bank notes and the owner says they are from the Halifax Hoard. I haven't heard about them, and can't find anything on google. Any links you can provide for information?

Thanks

I found this on google (didn't see a date for when it was posted)...

A unique time capsule of historic banknotes has recently been discovered, and the notes in this collection come from an interesting and historically important hoard. From the late 1940's through to the early 1970's, an affluent Halifax resident stashed away more than $200,000 in banknotes obtained directly from his bank. Most were the average circulated notes of the time, although some were also in groups of brand new notes. Physical cash provided the original owner with a sense of security in a world where family history and world events caused him to have a distrust in banks and traditional investments. For collectors today, the notes provide an unusual opportunity to acquire quantities of Canadian banknotes from about 50 years ago that were not widely saved. When this group was released to the collector community it was dubbed the "Halifax Hoard".

Nice profit margin....$500 turns into $899.95 with a little b.s.

Is it a profit margin... really?

Take that $500 from 1970.. imagine you invested that into a blue chip like RBC... With the dividends and growth you would've done 2x better in the last 10 years alone..

Not to split hairs here but this is exactly why I cringe everytime someone refers to coins or paper money as an investment ... or they talk about how much they made holding on to something that's generally common for years and selling it for above face.

If you are to factor in the rate of inflation as well as the rate of return lossed from not having it invested in stocks or mutuals... I would say more times than not there's an actual loss that's incurred for the average collector of average material.

If this Halifax collector/hoarder had instead picked silver coinage, high grade notes, gold or stocks, he'd have done much better. But hindsight is 20/20.

A few months ago someone on ebay was selling bundles of 1954 $20 bank notes. They are probably from the Halifax Hoard. Those notes look like well circulated notes and I am sure any Devil's Face bills were taken out.

1954-Series-$20-Bank-Notes

Also, whoever bought from the Shopping Channel got hosed as the lot of 25 banknotes for $900 works out to $40 per note after taxes. You could get much better condition notes for less than $40.
