Bought a cheap sealed blue Ike sight unseen of the 'Bay. When it came, it looked really nasty. It was covered in scaly white/green stuff. I assumed it was from the plastic and so I unsealed it and soaked it acetone for 2 hours. Nothing changed. The scale did not look like toning, though. For some reason I had the idea to try hot water. I sprayed it for a few minutes with the sink sprayer using hot water and the scale all dissolved! The coin looks perfect now. Didn't scrub or rub it at all.

So any guesses what that was? I've never seen this on any mint set coins before and I buy quite a few. Usually if there are issues they are toned yellowish or the gunk will dissolve in acetone. Guess I should start trying water first. Unfortunately I did not take before pictures .

I'm sure we'd all like to see the "after".

So it was covered in that scale while sealed in the package? Odd!

That sure is interesting. Maybe someone spilled some milk on it and there was a hole in the package. LOL
Rest in Peace

This I interesting. What I know
#1 Acetone is used to remove organic material.
Was it the wash material the Mint uses?

How old?
Wonder what the previous owner had it stored in?

This could be mold.

I looked a little closer at the packaging, and you can see a little break in the seal at the seam and the white scale making a trail in from there. So it literally could have been anything. Spill, mildew, moisture, who knows. I was under the impression it was sealed, so that made me think it would have had to be something common.

Glad it cleaned up nice! Guess I need to look closer and not assume "Sealed" always means a nice looking coin.

Yes, glad it turned out for the best. How about a picture of your rescued Ike?

Sorry, I've been working so I haven't had a chance to post pics. Here's the troubled Ike. There are few spots and lines on close inspection, but it looks good in the album:
