On a Morgan you have two designers...I think, A PL and DM..how do you tell the difference as I cannot figure it out. I see on the charts three different coins...one with no designer and than the other two so how can I differentiate between what is what....I can tell this is going to be a rough course...LOL

Good Morning Boomer!

You're getting this education via a firehose.

George T. Morgan designed the Morgan dollar and his initials (GM) are on the obverse between the neckline and hair. I'm not familiar with a "P.L." anywhere on the design. The only place I know "PL" is in description of a coin to indicate that the coin is proof-like and "D.M." to indicate Deep Mirror.

I think he meant designations.

Here's a site that will assist in your coin grading journey and has information on prooflike and deep mirror prooflike grading (check tab on prooflike coins). You can do the test with the coin in-hand but not with a photo.
