Did anyone give coins, notes or medals as presents? How did it work out? My wife said she liked this plaque in an auction catalog I was looking at one evening. So I put in a bid and managed to win it for her. Unfortunately it hasn't arrived yet, but I printed out a picture of it and let her know that her one of her Christmas presents is late but on its way. FRANCE. Jeune Fille aux Irises Plaquette, 1899. Bronze, 60.5 x 34.8mm. By J.P. Legastelois. Obv. Young woman facing right Rev. Iris flowers. Our oldest daughter's name is Iris, so it will have special meaning for us.

I gave my kids Mint Sets. They aren't really into coin collecting, so no major excitement; but it has become a Christmas tradition. I think they'd miss it if they didn't get one.

Yes and No. I had a roll of Madison $$ and handed one to each child after we gave presents out. It went really well and I think some adults weren't too happy they didn't get one. Looks like next year I'll need two rolls

Very cool t360. I didn't give coins as presents to anyone this year, since they wouldn't know what to do with them.

I know what you mean, Amazon99. I considered giving some Roman coins to my nephews but decided against it. Maybe I should have, it might have sparked an interest. Or the coins might have just been lost, it is hard to know.

My two nephews both got Christmas silver rounds, but the oldest also got a few AU Wheat Cents as well. This year he seemed really excited about the silver so I threw in something extra!

This year I gave birth year sets to my 6 grandchildren, hoping to spark an interest in collecting. The oldest, Taylor, 11, already has Lincoln Cent, Jefferson nickel, and Roosevelt dime albums. I'm hoping the others will follow suit. By the way, Happy New Year to everyone on the forum, thanks for sharing info here, and may 2008 be your best year ever!

I gave one of my nephews a 1918 Walker and started him out on a Presidential dollar album. I have another nephew who happened to get a little metal detector for Christmas so we put out several Adams and Madison dollars around the yard and let him go at it.

It's great that you guys give coins to the kids in your families! Seeding the lawn with Prez dollars is way cool, JimR, what a great idea to have fun with your nephew, sounds like a blast!

My kids (10 and 11) and I just started collecting coins this Christmas! I buy each of them a silver proof set every year, but up until now that's been the extent of our collecting. My daughter became very interested in coins several months back when she acquired a few foreign coins and a couple of wheat pennies. She's been trying to gather foreign and/or old coins ever since, so for Christmas this year I bought her 10 pounds of mixed foreign coins (no US or Canada) for less than $40 including s/h. She's been sorting through them for hours each day since Christmas, so it was money well spent. In addition to that, we took the money my grandparents sent us for Christmas and decided to start collecting US coins as a family. We started with a bag of 5,000 wheats and a 1909-2007 book to collect them in. We managed to fill most of the book from that bag (just missing most of the key/semi-key dates). Over time we'll fill in the holes and swap out some of the older coins for some in better condition. We also found quite a few Indian Head cents in the bag of wheats, so we're going to start an indian head/flying eagle book too. I guess the next step after that would be the nickels. So far, we're having a lot of fun with it.

I usually get my wife a couple dolphin coins for a stocking stuffer. She is not a coin collector, but she is a collector of dolphins so it works well This year, she got 1973 10 Lepta Greece, 1996 5 Kronur Iceland, and 1997 200 Escudos Portugal. As a bonus, she also got huge hunk o' bronze in the form of a dolphin calender medal from Medallic Art Company (76mm, 290gram )

I gave birthyear half dollars to cousins and aunt uncles and father. Put my first silver half in a bezel and made mom a necklace. All silver except my youngest cousin so he got a '71S Proof. Made it special that I found all of them while hunting silver and didn't go specifically buy them- also cheap for ME. Nobody gave ME jack, guess I was Santa again LOL. HH everyone, Mark

I gave my wife the 10 piece silver set of endangered species from Mexico and a 10th anniversary Loon. The kids got an almost full State Quarter book each and an almost empty Presidential $1 book.

I used to give away over 15 proof and uncirc sets for Christmas each year. People have been moving away or just vanishing. (Hate to use the word passing away) This year only about 10 of each.
