This is the third circulated proof coin I've found this year, preceded by an Eisenhower dollar and a 2000-S State Quarter. I wonder what would cause people to spend proof coins? This one has lots of hairlines and scratches but looks decent from a distance. It's got a nice cameo effect that's hard to photograph. The reverse took it worse than the obverse, for sure. Was in change tonight at work.

Grade opinions appreciated. These do appeal to collectors of circulated and impaired proofs, for reasons that I don't get, but then again, a lot of people don't like toning either, so to each their own :)

Since nobody posted, I'll give it a shot. Not sure, but would this be an impaired proof? PR58 maybe...since it circulated?

I think edweather is right. If it was pulled from change, as here, then I would say PR-58.
Rest in Peace

It does not have any noticeable wear. I don't think it was circulated for long, since the marks are mostly in the fields and more hairline scratches than major hits.

Yup. Pulled from change. I count the cashiers down every night and they know to save old, interesting, etc. coins for me in exchange for a "finder's fee" of 10x face value, or even extra if it's something particularly interesting to me ($10 extra "tip" about 10 years ago for an entire roll full of 40% Kennedy halves!)

I've gotten quite a few rarely-circulated coins this way: 2000-S Proof Massachusetts, 1974 proof Ike dollar, 1961 proof penny and nickel, 1981 SBA proof $1, 1903 IHC, 1907 V nickel, 1937 Buffalo nickel, the above roll of 40% Kennedy half dollars, etc. Some lower grade 50s and 60s silver, steel pennies/War Jefferson nickels, and about 10-12 rolls of circulated Wheat cents. Back when Vegas used real slot machines, I used to drive my wife crazy nights @ the Riviera digging through buckets of quarters and nickels looking for that elusive silver Washington or key-date Jefferson.

Sure, the coins are mostly circulated or beat-up, but they've got to have interesting stories behind how and why they ended up being spent :)

I am thinking PR58. I see traces of wear on the cheeks and high point on Montecello. Third picture is where I noticed it. Lots of scratches as you pointed out.

People could break them out of sets because they have no clue what they are, kids "borrowing" from dads collection, stolen sets.... Probably lots more reasons I have not though of.

Loaded with surface marks in the fields, it's a circulated coin.
