I guess the pros do sleep afterall. I haven't heard from Koinpro lately, I hope to. I'm going to have to hit the sack myself, I have a big day tomorrow. Talk to you later Kid.

There is definitely something going on there but I just can't quite tell what it is.. Hopefully an expert comes along to help as I am not very good with nickels.

Because of the Nickel in the Nickel (75% copper-25% nickel) it made the planchets harder, so the dies of steel suffer a lot faster than on the Copper/zinc planchets. The die wear is what we are seeing on the nickel. This you can see it on both sides of the devices. The started out as a normal die, then now it has a few wrinkles on it making the coins look like that. Just a single strike causes this. Die wear is the problem.

CoinMasters, I've been working on coins and books to sell and had to take a break from posting. I got a bunch of books on Amazon now and more to go up. All, I agree this is Die Deterioration. The causes are two-fold, plain old fashioned die wear and especially in the 1982-84 Jeff nick era -- premature die fatigue due to improper hardening of the dies.

Well Coop, I knew this one was good for something. I appreciate it. Koinpro, good to hear from you, you are appreciated too. You are a busy man. Perhaps you could recommend one your writings or a book to me. My interest is modern variety and error, business strike coins. Thanks to all for the input, the lesson for me on this one is the doubling on both sides of the devices kills it- no matter how sweet it looks. lol
