Was coin roll hunting a roll of dimes and stumbled on these three. Any errors here? Also, could anyone recommend a book on coin errors. I want to learn more about them

Thanks

PaulZ, your coin # 2 I am assuming its relatively new, probably 2013 or newer. I have seen this phenomenon happen on coins before. I don't know the reason it happens, put it is not worth keeping.

Coins 1 and 2 are more interesting, however we need to have pictures of the whole coin, obverse and reverse to help you out.

coin 1 may be an error but it could be PMD (post mint Damage), we need to see the entire coin.

Coin 2 could be die cracks or some other error, but we need to see the coin to determine.

Not sure about the first one.

The second one is from extreme die wear. I see it all the time on these Volunteers dimes. The lines are from die flow.

The third one looks like they're just die chips.

I don't use a book for coin errors but error-ref.com is the first place I go to to look up coin errors.

1st one is either a lamination, struck through or PMD.

You're right. From the ten or so volunteer dimes I saw in that roll, most of them had some of these lines

A good book on errors and varieties in general is Alan Herbert's, Official Price Guide To Mint Errors. The seventh edition saw a small run and is very expensive but as editor of that edition I can tell you that there is very little difference between the 6th and 7th editions. Also, pay no attention to pricing -- Alan never wanted pricing in the book but the publisher insisted on it and that the title including the word "price." Pricing is all but worthless in this book. As a educational tool it's hard to beat.

Another good book is Arnold Margolis and Fred Weinberg's, The Error Coin Encyclopedia.
