A die cap is what is struck to the die and now dislodged. Struck through a die cap leaves the die cap that prevents the strike.: Rotating die cap. (the cap is getting loose on the die)
I read something about die caps, but interpreted it incorrectly. This coin is deeply inset in the middle, that is, the edge comes up on both sides of the coin. The rim is very thin. The pictures do it little justice.
